The Ideal & Co – Living Heritage * emerges of a union between the origins of designers Rute Vieira and José Lima , their experiences and passions, and the love and complicity they share in both their personal and professional lives.

The designing team believes that something genuine and sincere must come from the heart and that ideas arise stronger when individual stories fit with each other to the point of sharing the same values and dreams.

The academic background in Design, complemented with living in a special city like Porto, where many different ways of living and of feeling are merged, allowed the creation of a very unique aesthetic vision and mentality.

On the other hand, being able to travel professionally has allowed the designers to recognize that the recreation of manufactured work for urban areas uses, allied with new technologies, makes perfect sense today.

The intrinsic desire to create something beautiful is joined with the desire to combine the national heritage that they admire so much, which results in a concept of contemporaneity of extreme importance and role in a collection which in truth is a reflection of their own selfs.

At the same time that Ideal & Co – Living Heritage* pretends to revive the traditional, non-polluting, tanning industry, it also aims to stimulate and breathe new life into the small workshops and artisans that still work these products in a traditional manner.

The social component of Ideal & Co – Living Heritage* is conducted on a production and manufacturing basis. One of the first aims of the brand has been the revitalization of artisans and workshops in the Parque Natural da Serra d’Aire e Candeeiros. This has been realized through the reintegration of different groups of artisans who worked alone or in small workshops, and as result of that an improvement in the traditional production techniques has been ensured.

Each piece is molded, glued and sewed by an individual artisan, using ancient knowledge that has been passed through generations. When an artisan focus solely on one piece he is able to test it and refine it in such a way that when ready the final product will be like no other.

By working with the tannery industry in the region of Alcanena, Portugal, in the area of vegetable leather tanning, ancestral techniques of manufacture and hide treatment are recovered. This ensures a minimizing of the environmental footprint, changing completely the characteristic paradigm of this industry in the region.

Over the last century vegetable leather tanning has become gradually less common across all tanning industries in the world. Mainly due to the increasing consumer demand and mass production techniques, the traditional method of vegetable hide tanning, which usually takes weeks to months to produce, has been substituted by chromium hide tanning which is highly polluting but much faster to produce.

Nowadays, almost no factories in Europe are still producing vegetable-tanned leather with eco-friendly processes. In Portugal, some few have resisted thanks to loyal customers such as saddler companies which have always been faithful in their use of the best tradicional nacional leathers.

The products from Ideal & Co – Living Heritage* reflect an ecological and sustainable character through their use of 100% vegetable-tanned leather, made in Portugal.

Inspired by the entire historical, social and cultural life of a family, and of a region Ideal& Co – Living Heritage* has as a starting point, and inspiration for each collection, the richness of materials as well as the natural and human resources of the “Parque Natural das Serras d’Aire e Candeeiros”.
Ideal & Co – Living Heritage* aims to stimulate and breathe new life into the small workshops and local artisans that still work these products in a traditional manner.

“The Natural Park of Serra de Aire and Candeeiros, with an area of approximately 35,000 hectares, was established in 1979, occupying more than two thirds of the Estremadura Limestone Massif which is the most important limestone area in Portugal (…) The park occupies a large extent, covering several municipalities: Alcobaça and Porto de Mos in Leiria District and Alcanena, Rio Maior, Santarém, Torres Novas and Ourém in Santarém District. (…) Having been occupied by humans since prehistory, the park has many places that are still undiscovered, also harboring villages, towns and cities of great historical heritage and legacy.(…) About 24,000 people reside in the park area, concentrated in the periphery, along the textile and leather industry poles, while the rural population gets scarcer. “*
