Although we like to travel abroad, more and more we are sure that we are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful countries in Europe and places such as Casas Caiadas are proof of this. Just over an hour’s drive from Lisbon, this small ‘village’ located in the middle of a large estate near Sabugueiro, Arraiolos, is the fruit of the reconstruction work of more than three years of Paula and Mário Domingues. Having recovered three distinct houses, which were part of a nucleus of ancient water mills, the couple opened Casas Caiadas in 2015 with the purpose of sharing this beautiful part of Alentejo surrounded by centuries-old olive trees, stone outcrops and a small stream full of wild life.
With the help of the architect Luís Pereira Miguel, Paula and Mário managed to restore dignity to this group of abandoned structures, creating one of the best places to relax in Alentejo, recognized in 2016 in Monocle magazine’s Travel Top 50 Awards as the ‘Most Tasteful Renovation’.
Consisting of three buildings, Casas Caiadas are ideal to enjoy with family or a group of friends, since the entire ‘village’ is reserved as a whole. While the old straw warehouse has been transformed into an appealing suite with stone walls, the larger house has two bedrooms and a suite. To complete the whole, the old mill is currently used as a common space, the most social place of Casas Caiadas, where the living room and kitchen are installed. However it is outside that is located one of the most appealing points of this well-kept secret, the circular-shaped swimming pool, perfect for cooling off during the day or at night to observe the starry sky.
Definitely a place to visit for the respect for history, simplicity, use of natural materials and small touches of modernity that make all the difference, just as we like it at Ideal & Co!
