George Rodger’s Land Rover

The great adventurers of the twentieth century were one of our great inspirations when we created Ideal & Co. George Rodger was one of them and his exploration of North Africa in the late 1950s is particularly inspiring. Together with his wife Jinx, the co-founder of Magnum Photos toured the Atlas Mountains with his faithful Land Rover, past majestic 15th-century Berber fortresses and date palmeries in El Golea in search of nomadic Tuareg tribes, and through the intensifying combat of the Algerian war, ferrying them some 6500 km over three months.

Nicknamed ‘Mzuri’ by Rodger, which means ‘very good’ in Swahili, the sturdy 4×4 was eventually sold after the intrepid duo returned to England and formed a family. After 30 years of not knowing its whereabouts, the rusty 107in Series I was found in Australia by Land Rover Heaven’s David and Janelle D’Arcy in a stroke of luck.
